Karnataka Upa Lokayukta Justice B. Veerappa has directed officials to initiate stringent action against unauthorised homestays operating in and around the Hampi World Heritage Site, stressing that illegal commercial activities cannot be allowed to threaten the region’s heritage and ecological balance.
During a review meeting in Vijayanagara district, the Upa Lokayukta expressed concern over the proliferation of unlicensed homestays and directed the district administration, Tourism Department and other concerned authorities to identify establishments functioning without statutory approvals and take action in accordance with the law.
Justice Veerappa emphasised that Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, requires strict protection from unauthorised constructions and commercial activities that violate planning regulations and environmental norms. He instructed officials to ensure that all tourism-related establishments comply with the prescribed licensing procedures and legal requirements.
He also warned officials against administrative negligence, stating that failure to enforce regulations would invite accountability. Authorities were directed to intensify inspections, verify licences and initiate legal proceedings wherever violations are detected.
The Upa Lokayukta observed that illegal homestays not only violate government regulations but also pose challenges to planned tourism development, environmental conservation and heritage protection. He stressed that preserving Hampi’s historical significance must remain a priority while promoting sustainable tourism in the region.
Officials informed the meeting that steps are being taken to identify unauthorised establishments and verify their compliance with the applicable rules. Departments have been asked to coordinate closely to ensure effective implementation of the directions and prevent further illegal operations.
Justice Veerappa reiterated that no individual or business would be permitted to operate outside the legal framework and urged the administration to take prompt action against violators. He said strict enforcement would help safeguard Hampi’s heritage, protect environmentally sensitive areas and ensure that tourism development takes place in a regulated and sustainable manner.
