The office bearers of the Karnataka State Farmers’ Association and Karmika Sena district unit submitted a petition to the Excise Department, seeking action against alleged illegal transportation and sale of liquor in rural areas of the district.
District president Polappa M. Narayanor said some wine shops and bars were supplying liquor to villages through vehicles including two-wheelers and other means. He said such activities were affecting families and creating social problems due to alcohol addiction. Women and children were facing difficulties, while the risk of young people becoming addicted was also increasing. The association demanded strict action against those involved in illegal activities and requested cancellation of licenses if violations continued.
The members also urged authorities to prevent illegal liquor sales in villages and protect public health. They warned that if no proper action was taken, the organisations would approach the Lokayukta with documents including vehicle GPS details as evidence of illegal transport. District General Secretary Mallikarjuna Hulibetta, Yadgiri taluk president Bhimaraya Baaur and other members were present during the submission of the petition. The representatives said controlling unlawful liquor trade would help reduce accidents caused by drunk driving and improve safety in rural communities.
They appealed to the Excise Department to conduct regular inspections and take necessary steps to stop such activities across the district and ensure safer villages.
