Five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and head coach Stephen Fleming have mutually agreed to part ways, bringing an end to one of the most successful and enduring partnerships in the tournament’s history.

The announcement was made by the franchise on Monday through a post on X, thanking the former New Zealand captain for his immense contribution since the team’s inception in 2008.

“The Super Kings and Head Coach Stephen Fleming have mutually decided to part ways. Together, we shared one of the most successful and enduring partnerships in IPL history. The legacy you’ve built will continue to inspire us,” the franchise said.

Fleming joined CSK as a player in the inaugural IPL season in 2008 before taking over as head coach in 2009. During his tenure, the franchise established itself as one of the league’s most consistent teams, winning five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 crowns. Under his guidance, CSK also reached the IPL playoffs a record 12 times and appeared in 10 finals.

However, the team’s fortunes have dipped since lifting the IPL trophy in 2023. CSK failed to qualify for the playoffs in each of the last three seasons, leading to growing scrutiny of Fleming’s role despite his remarkable record.

CSK owner Rupa Gurunath described Fleming as the “heartbeat” of the franchise’s coaching setup.

“For nearly two decades, he has helped shape our identity, vision and pursuit of excellence. On behalf of everyone at the Super Kings, we extend our deepest gratitude for his unwavering commitment, passion and leadership,” she said.

While the franchise has not announced a successor, the departure marks the end of an era for CSK, whose identity became closely associated with Fleming’s calm leadership and tactical acumen.

With skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad expected to lead the team’s rebuilding phase, attention will now turn to who takes charge of one of the IPL’s most decorated franchises ahead of the 2027 season.
