Government hospital proposes critical care upgrade

A major government hospital with a capacity of 905 beds has proposed strengthening its critical care services by adding more ventilators and recruiting specialized healthcare staff to meet increasing patient requirements. The proposal highlights the shortage of ventilator facilities and trained manpower needed to provide advanced treatment for critically ill patients.

According to hospital records, 108 beds are currently supported with ventilator facilities, including ICU, HDU, and post-operative care units. However, the available facilities are inadequate compared to the requirements prescribed under the Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS). The hospital has sought additional support to bridge the gap and improve critical care services.

As part of the expansion plan, the hospital has proposed the addition of 50 ventilator beds in various critical care departments, including Medical ICU (MICU), High Dependency Unit (HDU), Emergency ICU (EICU), Cardiac ICU (CICU), Paediatric ICU (PICU), Neonatal ICU (NICU), and post-operative ventilator care units.

Hospital authorities have stated that additional manpower is essential for operating the expanded facilities. The requirement includes 150 nursing staff, 10 anaesthesia technicians, two intensivists, and 10 ICU technicians. These professionals will support ventilator management, patient monitoring, emergency response, and intensive treatment procedures.

The hospital has emphasized that increasing ventilator capacity and strengthening manpower will help provide timely treatment to critically ill patients, reduce referrals to other healthcare centres, and improve the overall quality of medical services.

The proposed expansion is aimed at ensuring better preparedness for emergencies and improving compliance with IPHS guidelines. The hospital expects that additional infrastructure and skilled personnel will significantly enhance its ability to handle critical cases and provide advanced healthcare services to the public.
