China’s latest submarine-launched ballistic missile test highlighted advancing nuclear capabilities while drawing regional scrutiny over strategic deterrence operations.

China’s recent submarine-launched ballistic missile test into the southern Pacific Ocean has drawn significant international attention, with defence analysts and diplomats viewing the exercise as an important milestone in the country’s expanding nuclear deterrence programme. The missile, launched on Monday from a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, is believed to have provided Chinese military leaders with an opportunity to assess the operational readiness of one of the most sensitive components of the nation’s strategic forces.
Experts noted that managing nuclear-armed submarines presents extraordinary technical and operational challenges. Such submarines are designed to remain hidden while operating over vast distances, making secure command, control and communication systems essential. Analysts believe the latest exercise was not only intended to evaluate the missile’s performance but also to test the effectiveness of communications between military commanders and submarines operating in stealth conditions.
Collin Koh, a security scholar at Singapore’s S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, said the exercise likely examined several critical aspects beyond the missile’s technical performance. According to him, China appears to be moving closer to achieving a fully operational submarine-based nuclear strike capability. He suggested that while China may still face challenges in positioning submarines close enough to threaten the continental United States, the country could potentially target strategic American territories such as Guam and Hawaii.
The United States described the weapon as an intercontinental ballistic missile that landed in the southern Pacific Ocean. The launch also attracted criticism from several regional countries, which closely monitor developments involving long-range missile systems and nuclear deterrence capabilities in the Indo-Pacific region.
Chinese authorities, however, maintained that the launch was a routine military exercise conducted professionally and in accordance with international law. State media stated that the test was not directed at any specific country or target. Responding to reports surrounding the launch, China’s Ministry of National Defense dismissed some international interpretations as exaggerated and misleading.
The ministry further stated that China’s ongoing nuclear modernisation programme is intended to safeguard national strategic security while contributing to global strategic stability. Officials reiterated that the country’s defence policies remain defensive in nature and that the enhancement of nuclear capabilities is aimed at strengthening deterrence rather than provoking conflict. Defence analysts believe the missile was launched from one of China’s six Type-094 nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines, commonly known as SSBNs. Although Chinese state media confirmed that the launch involved a strategic missile submarine, it did not identify the vessel’s exact class.
