Cape Verde makes history, reaches round 32

HOUSTON

Cape Verde has officially cemented its name in football history. The island nation has become the smallest country ever to reach the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 after a gritty 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia.

The “Blue Sharks” finished their group stage campaign with three consecutive draws. This remarkable unbeaten run was enough to secure second place in Group H, pushing them ahead of former champions Uruguay and Saudi Arabia. Their reward for this historic achievement is a high-profile showdown against Lionel Messi’s Argentina, the defending world champions. The match is set to take place at Miami Stadium on July 3, marking the biggest sporting moment in Cape Verdean history.

Throughout the match against Saudi Arabia, Cape Verde looked like the more dangerous side. They pushed hard for a goal, with players like Willy Semedo and Kevin Pina coming close to finding the back of the net. While the Saudi goalkeeper, Mohammed Al Owais, put up a strong performance, he could not stop the momentum of the spirited African side.

With the group stages nearing their conclusion, the Round of 32 lineup is officially taking shape. Other nations like Belgium, South Africa, and South Korea have also secured their spots in the next phase. As the tournament moves into the knockout rounds starting June 28, all eyes will be on the massive clash between the tournament favorites, Argentina, and the determined underdogs from Cape Verde.
