V-P to visit Ladakh for Yoga Day

Leh

Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan will undertake his first official visit to the Union Territory of Ladakh from Friday to Sunday, during which he will participate in International Day of Yoga celebrations and interact with local communities in border areas.

The visit is expected to highlight both the government’s development initiatives in remote regions and its continued emphasis on public health and youth engagement.

According to an official statement issued on Thursday, the Vice-President’s itinerary includes a visit to the Vibrant Village of Lukung on June 20. During the visit, he will interact with members of local Self-Help Groups and review developmental projects being implemented under the government’s Vibrant Villages Programme. The initiative is aimed at improving infrastructure, livelihoods, and connectivity in strategically important border villages while enhancing the quality of life for residents living in remote areas.

Officials stated that the Vice-President will gain firsthand insight into the progress of various welfare and development measures undertaken in the region. The programme is considered a key component of the government’s efforts to strengthen border communities and promote inclusive growth in frontier areas.

Later on the same day, Radhakrishnan will pay homage at a War Memorial in Ladakh, honouring the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces who have served in the challenging high-altitude region. The visit is expected to underscore the importance of national security and the contribution of military personnel stationed along India’s borders.

On June 21, the Vice-President will participate in the International Day of Yoga celebrations in Leh. The event is expected to witness the participation of a large number of young people, armed forces personnel, government officials, and representatives of various organisations. The programme aims to promote awareness about the benefits of yoga and encourage healthy lifestyles through the practice of physical and mental well-being disciplines.

The celebrations will align with India’s broader efforts to promote yoga as a global movement for holistic health, stress management, and wellness. Since the United Nations adopted June 21 as International Day of Yoga, the annual event has become a significant platform for promoting the ancient Indian practice worldwide.

In a separate development, the Vice-President reiterated his support for the Drug-Free Campus Campaign, an initiative he launched last year to combat substance abuse among students. He urged universities and educational institutions across the country to actively participate in the campaign and encourage students to become ambassadors for a drug-free society.
