Government Refutes E20 Fuel Insurance Claim Rumours

Government clarified that using E20 fuel does not affect motor insurance validity or claim settlements.

New Delhi

The government on Tuesday firmly rejected claims circulating on social media that the use of E20 fuel could result in the rejection of vehicle insurance claims. Addressing growing concerns among motorists, the Press Information Bureau’s Fact Check unit clarified that motor insurance policies remain fully valid for vehicles operating on E20 fuel and that no such restrictions exist.

The clarification was issued following the spread of social media posts suggesting that vehicle owners using E20 fuel might face challenges in obtaining insurance coverage or securing claim settlements. These claims generated confusion among motorists as the government continues to promote ethanol-blended fuels across the country.

In a post on the social media platform X, the PIB Fact Check unit labeled the claim as false and emphasized that the use of E20 fuel has no impact on the validity of motor insurance policies. The government reiterated that policyholders do not risk losing insurance benefits simply because they use ethanol-blended petrol in their vehicles.

Officials stressed the importance of relying on verified information and urged citizens to consult official sources before believing or sharing such claims. The PIB also encouraged the public to actively report suspicious or misleading content in order to curb the spread of misinformation on digital platforms.

The clarification comes at a time when India’s ethanol blending programme has achieved significant progress. According to a recent report by KPMG in India, E20 fuel has now been operationalized across the country, marking a major milestone in the government’s efforts to expand the use of cleaner and more sustainable fuels.

The report highlighted both the opportunities and challenges associated with the next phase of ethanol adoption. Key issues identified include feedstock availability, supply chain efficiency, infrastructure readiness, and the need for continued policy support as the country moves beyond E20 fuel adoption.

The government has been actively promoting ethanol-blended petrol as part of its broader strategy to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, strengthen energy security, and support environmental sustainability. Increased ethanol blending is also expected to benefit the agricultural sector by creating additional demand for feedstock crops used in ethanol production.
