Karnataka Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot on Saturday said Ayurveda is not merely a system of treatment but a healthy way of life, and urged young medical professionals to place human values at the centre of their practice.
Speaking after inaugurating the second convocation ceremony of Tapovana Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital and the Institute of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences in Davanagere, the Governor highlighted India’s rich and ancient medical heritage. He said Ayurveda, Yoga and naturopathy have gained greater relevance in modern times as the world faces increasing mental stress and environmental challenges.
Gehlot noted that Ayurveda promotes holistic well-being and healthy living rather than focusing solely on curing diseases. He said traditional systems of medicine continue to offer valuable solutions to contemporary health concerns and should be integrated with modern healthcare approaches.
The Governor also underscored the growing impact of technology on the medical profession. He said advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital healthcare services are transforming the healthcare sector and creating new opportunities for diagnosis, treatment and patient care.
He urged graduating doctors to move beyond conventional medical knowledge and embrace scientific innovations. According to him, the new generation of healthcare professionals should serve as a bridge between traditional medical wisdom and modern scientific developments.
Gehlot said AI can improve the accuracy and speed of disease diagnosis, while digital health services can help extend medical care to remote and underserved regions. He encouraged young doctors to become researchers who use technology and data to address emerging health challenges.
Describing medical service as one of the noblest forms of humanitarian work, the Governor said patients often require compassion, positive communication and emotional support as much as medicines. He stressed that doctors must give the highest priority to human values throughout their professional careers.
He also noted that the Union Ministry of AYUSH is actively promoting traditional systems of medicine and referred to the establishment of the World Health Organization’s Global Traditional Medicine Centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat.
Several dignitaries, academicians and medical professionals attended the convocation ceremony.
