Paris Saint-Germain suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat to Paris FC in their final Ligue 1 match
Paris
Fresh off lifting the Ligue 1 title, Paris Saint-Germain ended their domestic campaign on a disappointing note after falling 2-1 to city neighbours Paris FC. The defeat came in their final league outing before the UEFA Champions League final against Arsenal, adding an unexpected setback to an otherwise dominant season.
PSG had already secured a record-extending 14th French league title earlier in the week with a win over Lens and were officially presented with the trophy before kickoff at the Stade Jean-Bouin. Head coach Luis Enrique fielded a strong lineup as he looked to fine-tune preparations ahead of the European final in Budapest on May 30.
However, concerns arose when star forward Ousmane Dembélé was forced off before the half-hour mark in what appeared to be a fitness scare. While PSG took the lead early in the second half through Bradley Barcola, the match turned dramatically in the closing stages.
Substitute Alimami Gory struck twice for Paris FC, including a stoppage-time winner that handed the newly promoted side an impressive 2-1 victory. Despite the loss, PSG remain focused on their Champions League final, where they will attempt to defend their European crown.
“It has been a tricky end to the season, but now we have two weeks to prepare for the biggest match in our history,” said Luis Enrique, while downplaying concerns over Dembélé’s condition and attributing his substitution to fatigue.
Elsewhere, Lille secured a return to the Champions League by finishing third, despite a 2-0 defeat to Auxerre. Their qualification was confirmed after Lyon suffered a heavy 4-0 loss to Lens, leaving them fourth and forced into the qualifying rounds.
Marseille also booked European football with a 3-1 win over Rennes, while other qualification and relegation battles went down to the wire across a dramatic final night. Monaco lost a thrilling 5-4 contest against Strasbourg, and Nice were pushed into a relegation play-off after a goalless draw with Metz.
The Ligue 1 finale delivered high drama across the table, but PSG’s shock defeat provided the standout surprise ahead of their continental showdown.
