Authorities in Kalaburagi city have issued a public advisory asking residents to boil drinking water before use after concerns were raised over the deterioration in the quality of water sourced from the Bhima river, which supplies a major portion of the city’s drinking water needs.

Officials from the KUWSMP–KUIDFC Project Implementation Unit stated that the inflow into the Bhima river has stopped, leading to stagnation of water. This has resulted in algae formation, which is believed to have affected overall water quality in the river source.

Although authorities clarified that the water supplied to households is being treated and disinfected through a super-chlorination process, they have urged citizens to take additional precautionary measures. Residents have been advised to boil, cool, and filter drinking water before consumption to ensure safety.

Officials have also instructed households to install water storage tanks for tap connections. They explained that proper storage systems would help maintain hygiene and reduce the risk of contamination. In low-lying areas, there is a possibility of contaminated water accumulating and re-entering pipelines, which could potentially lead to the spread of waterborne and infectious diseases.

Authorities further noted that installing storage tanks would also help prevent water wastage and improve overall distribution efficiency.

Residents have been urged to cooperate with the Kalaburagi City Corporation, KUIDFC, and L&T Limited, which are involved in water supply and infrastructure management. Officials stressed that public participation is essential to effectively implement safety and precautionary measures.

The advisory comes as part of preventive steps to safeguard public health until normal water flow conditions in the Bhima river are restored. Citizens have been asked to remain cautious and follow hygiene guidelines strictly to avoid any health risk.
