Basanagouda Patil Yatnal made a series of statements in Vijayapura that triggered political and public discussion, covering issues ranging from the hijab debate to fuel prices and internal party politics.

Speaking to reporters, Yatnal said saffron shawls are part of Hindu faith and announced that students would be encouraged to wear them when schools reopen in June. He questioned opposition to saffron attire in educational institutions and urged Hindu parents to send children to school with tilak and saffron shawls. He also suggested that students say “Jai Shri Ram” during attendance instead of “Yes Sir,” remarks that sparked controversy and debate.

In another statement, Yatnal defended the recent petrol and diesel price hike, saying it was influenced by international conditions and was necessary in the national interest. He criticised the Congress government over taxation policies, claiming that it had previously demanded fuel price reductions but was now opposing similar issues. He challenged the state government to reduce fuel taxes from 30% to 20% if it was serious about public relief.

Yatnal also responded strongly to allegations made by minister M. B. Patil, who accused him of political blackmail. He denied the claims and said he had never used corruption-related information for personal gain. Instead, he stated that he had raised issues within the party for corrective action.

He further alleged that the Congress government was engaging in minority appeasement politics and called for Hindu unity across political lines. Comparing political trends in other states, he said efforts were underway to build a broader alternative political force in Karnataka with support from Hindu communities.

Referring to internal BJP leadership, he criticised state president B. Y. Vijayendra for his silence on key issues and accused him of avoiding accountability. Yatnal added that he would continue touring districts to mobilise support and strengthen his political position in the state.
