FIFA World Cup countdown begins amid tensions, ticket outrage and broadcast uncertainty

Intro

Expanded global football spectacle faces controversies despite excitement building before historic tournament begins.

NEW YORK

The countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup has officially begun, but political tensions, soaring ticket prices and unresolved broadcasting issues have overshadowed preparations for football’s biggest tournament.

For the first time in history, the World Cup will be jointly hosted by United States, Canada and Mexico, with a record 48 nations participating in the expanded tournament scheduled from June 11 to July 19.

While excitement surrounding the competition continues to grow, off-field controversies have increasingly dominated headlines. Ongoing tensions in West Asia, particularly the continuing conflict involving Iran and the United States, have raised concerns over the participation and travel arrangements of Iran national football team.

Iran is scheduled to play its group-stage matches in Los Angeles and Seattle, though uncertainty surrounding the geopolitical situation has sparked widespread debate. FIFA president Gianni Infantino has, however, assured that Iran will participate in the tournament.

Another major issue has been the dramatic rise in ticket prices, which has drawn criticism from football fans worldwide. The most expensive face-value ticket for the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar cost around $1,600, while premium tickets for the 2026 final at MetLife Stadium are reportedly being sold for nearly $33,000.

The tournament will also mark the first World Cup featuring 48 teams, expanding from the traditional 32-team format. FIFA’s new structure increases the number of group-stage matches from 48 to 72, significantly lengthening the competition.

Questions remain over whether the tournament can maintain its intensity and appeal amid concerns about player fatigue and scheduling demands.

Fans in India are also anxiously awaiting clarity over official broadcasting rights, which are yet to be finalised just weeks before kickoff.

Despite the controversies, the tournament promises several historic moments, including debut appearances for nations like Curaçao and Cape Verde.

The competition will begin at Estadio Azteca before concluding with the final in New Jersey, as football prepares for its biggest-ever global celebration.
