Railway activists honored, demand for new route grows

GADAG

Local activists are stepping up their demand for the Gadag-Harapanahalli railway line, calling it a vital link for the future of North Karnataka. During a special ceremony held at the city’s tourist center, the Gadag District Vikas Vedike honored members of the struggle committee for their persistent efforts in lobbying the central government.

Basavaraj Navalgund, the committee’s founder, emphasized that this new route is not just about tracks, it is about progress. He noted that the line would revolutionize trade, health services, and education for thousands of residents. Recent progress has fueled local optimism, as the central government has already allocated ₹9 lakh specifically for the survey work. “We have taken our protests and appeals to Bengaluru, Hubballi, and even Delhi. This survey funding is a sign of hope that the whistle of a train will soon be heard on this route,” Navalgund stated.

Vikas Vedike President Vishwanath Khanapur added that the project has already gained significant political support. Petitions have been submitted to several key leaders, including Minister H.K. Patil and local MLAs. Khanapur explained that the route would turn Gadag Junction into a major transport hub, benefiting travelers from Bagalkot and Vijayapura heading toward Bengaluru.

Other local leaders, including former municipal members Manjunath Mulgund and M.S. Parvatha Gowda, urged the government to speed up land acquisition. They stressed that well-placed stations along the route are essential for passenger convenience. The event concluded with a collective call for citizens to join the movement to ensure Gadag’s industrial and economic growth.
