Gadag unsafe water crisis sparks public outcry

The activist said chicken market waste is dumped into drainage causing foul smell, while nearby road is damaged, hanging dangerously and risking pedestrians daily

GADAG

Residents of Gadag city have raised serious concern over poor civic conditions in Javali Galli where a major storm water drain and drinking water pipeline system has been badly neglected by authorities said social activist Krishna H Hadapada in a press statement

He said the drinking water line drawn from Tungabhadra river passes through filthy drain water and is covered with waste including plastic and garbage creating serious health risks for nearby areas

He warned that even a small leak in the pipeline could allow sewage water to mix with drinking water affecting residents of Doragalli Hombalanaka Janata Colony Mageri Oni and Ambedkar Nagar and increasing risk of diseases like cholera and typhoid

The activist also highlighted that waste from a nearby chicken market including rotten meat and blood is being dumped directly onto the drainage area making the surroundings unbearable with foul smell affecting daily life of people

Hadapada further stated that the main cement concrete road near the drain has lost its foundation and is now hanging in the air creating fear among pedestrians especially school children and workers who use this route every day

He said that a major accident has been avoided only because heavy vehicles are currently not using the road due to ongoing railway flyover work but warned that the situation could turn dangerous once traffic resumes

He urged Gadag District In charge Minister HK Patil to immediately direct officials to shift the drinking water pipeline to a safe location and repair the damaged road without delay to prevent a possible disaster

Calling the situation alarming he said asking whether people are being supplied drinking water or poison as the pipeline lies under waste and sewage he warned that if immediate action is not taken residents may be forced to protest in front of the municipal council demanding accountability and urgent repair work

Local residents have also expressed frustration over repeated neglect and said they hope authorities will respond quickly to restore safe drinking water and protect public health in the area before any major tragedy occurs in the neighbourhood.
