Mercedes backs return of V8 engines

MIAMI

Formula One could soon sound a lot louder. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has confirmed that the team is “absolutely up for” bringing back V8 engines by 2030. This follows a bold statement from FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who promised that the iconic, high-revving engines would return to the grid by 2031 at the latest.

The sport currently uses V6 hybrid engines, which some fans find too quiet and complex. While Wolff is excited about the nostalgic roar of a V8, he insists the move must remain practical. He argued that Formula One cannot ignore the “real world,” where electric power is becoming the norm. His vision for the future involves a “mega engine” that combines a powerful 800hp combustion heart with an extra 400hp boost from battery technology.

Mercedes, which currently supplies engines to four teams, wants these changes to be well-planned to ensure manufacturers can afford the shift. Critics of the current V6 units often complain about “artificial” racing, where drivers must constantly manage battery levels instead of pushing to the limit. Recent rule tweaks have tried to fix this, but the call for a “real racing engine” is growing louder.

F1 last used V8 engines in 2013 before switching to the current hybrids. If the FIA and manufacturers can agree on a balanced design, the next decade could see the sport return to its roots while staying high-tech. For Wolff and Mercedes, the goal is simple, make the engines loud, fast, and relevant for the future.
