Dharwad
Leader of Opposition in Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation Imran Eligara said that the BJP will take a U-turn on the issue of a separate municipal corporation for Dharwad. He spoke at a press conference in Dharwad city and said the decision is being delayed due to political reasons.
He said a resolution had already been passed to form a separate Dharwad municipal corporation and the state government is working on it. He alleged that BJP leaders in the current municipal body are stopping the move and pushing instead for a mega municipal corporation. He said the BJP had passed a mega corporation proposal in a hurry without proper discussion in the general body meeting.
Eligara criticized BJP corporators and said they are going against the wishes of people who elected them. He added that Congress leaders and members will continue to fight for a separate municipal corporation for Dharwad. He also said the resolution was wrongly passed by the Greater Municipal Corporation instead of the Dharwad Municipal Corporation.
Corporators Rajashekar Kamathi, Kavitha Kabbera, Deepa Neeralakatti, Shambhu Salimani and Tuljappa Pujara attended the press conference. Party leaders said the issue will continue to be discussed in coming meetings as the demand for a separate corporation grows among citizens of Dharwad and surrounding areas. Residents are watching the developments closely as both Congress and BJP continue to present different views on the structure of the local civic body and its future administration model.
Officials say final decision on separate Dharwad municipal corporation will depend on government review and consensus among elected representatives in the coming weeks of the region officially stated.
