Tata Motors edged past Mahindra & Mahindra in India’s passenger vehicle market in April 2026, marking a strong start to FY27 for the auto sector. Tata Motors reported 59,701 passenger vehicle sales, up 31.1% year-on-year, driven largely by domestic demand and rapidly growing electric vehicle adoption. EV sales jumped over 72%, highlighting increasing consumer shift toward electric mobility. The company also posted solid commercial vehicle growth, supported by strong demand for small trucks and logistics vehicles. Mahindra & Mahindra recorded 94,627 total vehicle sales, up 14%, with SUV growth of 8% and strong tractor performance rising 21%. However, its passenger vehicle momentum lagged Tata Motors. The results reflect intensifying competition in India’s SUV and EV space, where product mix and electrification are becoming key differentiators for market leadership.
