Rising heat keeps tourists away from Taj

The soaring temperatures across North India have turned the marble steps of the Taj Mahal into a scorching furnace, causing a sharp drop in tourist numbers. Usually packed with thousands of visitors, the world-famous monument saw unusually thin crowds as a brutal heatwave took hold of the region.

Local officials confirmed that the extreme weather has scared away both domestic and international travelers. Those who did brave the sun, like tourist Anjali Singh, described the experience as a struggle. “We finished our entire tour in just an hour because it was too hot for the children,” she said, highlighting the difficulties families are facing. With temperatures hitting between 40 and 46 degrees Celsius in many parts of the country, simply standing outdoors has become a health risk.

In response to the dangerous conditions, the India Meteorological Department has issued several alerts. In nearby Prayagraj, authorities have already shortened school hours and installed water ATMs to keep the public hydrated. Experts are urging anyone visiting outdoor sites to wear light cotton clothing and keep their heads covered to avoid heatstroke.

The heatwave is expected to continue for several days, affecting states from Punjab to Bihar. While the Taj Mahal remains a stunning sight, the current “yellow alert” for heat means the bustling souvenir shops and photo spots will likely stay quiet until the sun relents. For now, the cooling fountains and shadows are the only popular spots at India’s most iconic landmark.
