Court seizes Dharwad AC office furniture over compensation delay

Dharwad

Furniture from the office of the Dharwad Sub-Divisional Officer (AC) was seized by court staff after the government failed to pay full compensation for land acquired for a cemetery.

The action was carried out based on the order of the Second High Civil Court in Dharwad.

According to records, 2 acres of agricultural land belonging to Naganagowda Patil of Kondikoppa village in Navalgund taluk was acquired on April 8, 2010. The land was taken for cemetery use, as villagers were earlier performing cremation on private land.

The total compensation fixed was ₹35 lakh at the rate of ₹10,500 per gunta. However, officials reportedly paid only ₹20 lakh, leaving a pending amount of ₹15 lakh.

Following repeated appeals for the remaining payment, the landowner approached the court. The court then ordered action due to non-compliance, leading to the seizure of office furniture.

Court staff confiscated items including four chairs and a computer from the AC office.

Family members of the landowner said the land was given for public use after requests from local officials. They added that despite partial payments, the remaining amount was not released for a long time, forcing them to seek legal help.

The petitioner’s advocate also confirmed that the outstanding compensation had not been paid despite multiple requests to the authorities, leading to the court-ordered seizure of government office assets.
