Collector orders surprise raids to stop drug abuse

SP Dipan reported 14 arrested in 8 supply cases with seized ganja ₹1,49,500 and 112 arrested in consumption cases

K. Lakshmipriya instructed officials to conduct surprise inspections in homestays and resorts to prevent drug use and illegal supply in the district. She gave the direction while chairing the Encord Committee meeting held at the District Collector’s office hall on Tuesday.

She expressed concern that many young people aged between 18 and 35 are falling into drug addiction, with several cases already registered in the district police records. She said drug abuse is spreading among college students and directed authorities to increase awareness programs on the harmful effects of drugs in educational institutions.

She also instructed that all medical shops must strictly avoid selling medicines without a doctor’s prescription card. The District Drug Controller was asked to install awareness posters in pharmacies and take strict action against shops that violate rules.

She directed the police department to spread awareness about the “Drug Free Karnataka” mobile application, which provides information on drug-related complaints and enforcement activities. She also ordered all committee members to submit monthly reports on inspection progress.

Superintendent of Police Dipan M N informed that in 2026 so far, 14 people have been arrested in 8 drug supply cases, with ganja worth ₹1,49,500 seized. In addition, 112 people have been arrested in 97 cases of drug consumption.

Officials from the police, health, education, port and fisheries departments attended the meeting. The Collector stressed coordinated efforts between departments to strengthen enforcement and protect youth from drug abuse. She said strict monitoring and regular checks are necessary to ensure a drug-free district and warned that negligence will not be tolerated in implementing these safety measures across Uttara Kannada region immediately and effectively for public welfare.
