An awareness programme on child rights, safety, and laws was held at Jiraal Gram Panchayat Hall in Kanakagiri taluk with the aim of preventing child abuse and eliminating child marriage in the district.

The programme was organised jointly by the district administration, Zilla Panchayat, and District Child Protection Unit along with other departments. Experts shared important information on protecting children and ensuring their rights.

Speaking on the occasion, Shivaleela Vannuru from the District Child Protection Unit explained the provisions of the POCSO Act 2012. She said the law provides strict punishment, including imprisonment of up to life, for those involved in sexual abuse of children below 18 years.

Officials highlighted the role of village-level Child Protection Committees in spreading awareness and preventing crimes against children. They said such initiatives help communities understand laws and ensure a safe environment for children.

Resource person Pratibha Kashimath stressed the need to prevent child marriages, stating that such practices increase risks for mothers and infants. She said child marriage is illegal under state law and offenders can face one to two years in prison.

The programme was presided over by Gram Panchayat Administrator Abhilash. Several officials, including Panchayat Development Officers, police representatives, anganwadi workers, and teachers, participated in the event.

The session included introductory remarks, discussions, and a vote of thanks, with organisers expressing hope that awareness efforts would help build a safer environment for children.
