Shubman Gill laments costly batting slump late

Captain Shubman Gill lamented missed chances and a late-innings scoring drought after Gujarat Titans’ defeat, emphasizing that dropped catches and quiet overs proved extremely costly.

BENGALURU

Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill expressed disappointment following his team’s five-wicket defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Despite a massive century from Sai Sudharsan, the Titans failed to defend their total, leaving Gill to reflect on a critical loss of momentum during the final stages of their innings.

Speaking after the high-scoring thriller, Gill pointed to a strange boundary drought between the 16th and 19th overs as the turning point. At one stage, the Titans looked on track to score over 230 runs, but RCB’s bowlers, led by Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, tightened the screws. The Titans went 18 balls without a single boundary during the death overs, finishing at 205, a score Gill admitted was well below what they had hoped for.

The captain also highlighted a massive “what-if” moment early in the second innings. Legendary batter Virat Kohli was dropped on zero before going on to smash a match-winning 81. Gill admitted that while dropped catches are part of the game, failing to take wickets in the middle overs allowed Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal to take the game away with a 115-run partnership.

“We had our moments, but we weren’t consistent,” Gill remarked, praising RCB for their clinical middle-order batting. With this loss, the Titans face a tougher climb in the IPL 2026 standings, while RCB celebrates moving into second place. For Gill, the lesson is clear, in high-stakes T20 cricket, every quiet over and dropped chance carries a heavy price.
