KALABURAGI
The city of Kalaburagi transformed into a sea of devotion as thousands gathered to celebrate Basava Jayanthi. The birth anniversary of the 12th-century philosopher Basavanna was marked by a grand procession that wound through the heart of the city, bringing traffic to a standstill as residents paused to honor the legacy of the Sharana culture.
Starting at Nagareshwar School, the parade moved through major landmarks like the Super Market and City Central Mall before reaching the Basaveshwara statue at Jagat Circle. The air was thick with the scent of flowers as devotees offered tributes to more than ten beautifully decorated floats. These tableaux depicted the lives of revered Sharanas, including Nuliya Chandayya and Ambigara Chowdayya, reminding the younger generation of the inclusive history of the Lingayat movement.
The event was a feast for the senses, featuring folk artists from across Karnataka. The “Pooje Kunita” performers from Ramanagara and “Dollu Kunita” artists from local villages kept the energy high with rhythmic drumming and dance. While hundreds of women marched with ceremonial pots, youth groups celebrated to modern music, creating a unique blend of tradition and current culture.
The festivities were officially kicked off by Dodappa Appa of the Sharana Basaveshwara Sansthana. He was joined by a long list of leaders, including Minister Sharanabasappa Darshanapur and local MLAs. Beyond the spectacle, the massive turnout served as a powerful reminder of Basavanna’s lasting message of unity and social equality in modern India.
