Udupi activists protested SIR electoral revision, demanding safeguards, transparency, helplines, and pause pending Supreme Court cases
Udupi
A protest was held in front of the Udupi District Commissioner’s office on Wednesday by the Namma Mata Namma Haak coalition against the Special Intensive Revision of the electoral roll.
Speaking at the event, district coordinator Prof. Phaniraj said there is growing confusion and anxiety among citizens over the revision process in Karnataka. He alleged that similar exercises in other states and union territories have affected voting rights and weakened trust in the electoral system. The alliance claimed that the process could lead to exclusion of eligible voters and demanded strong safeguards from the administration.
A march was taken out from Coin Circle in Manipal to the District Collector’s office before submitting a memorandum to the Governor, Chief Minister and Election Commission. Organisers urged the district administration to set up helplines and help desks so that voters do not face difficulties during the SIR process. They also demanded that all information related to mapping activities be made public and updated regularly by authorities. The coalition submitted a petition to the District Collector seeking intervention from the Governor, Chief Minister and Election Commissioner. It demanded that the revision process be paused until pending cases in the Supreme Court are resolved.
The Namma Mata Namma Haak coalition said it will continue peaceful protests and awareness campaigns across Udupi district to protect voting rights and ensure that no eligible voter is left out of the electoral roll. Leaders said they will raise the issue with state authorities and continue democratic protest until reforms are made in the Special Intensive Revision process ensuring voter rights are fully protected going forward.
