Bagar Hukum cultivators in Vijayanagar district have issued a final warning to the state government, demanding a clear decision on land allotment within one month. They said that if their demands are not met, they will launch a “do or die” struggle across the state.
Under the leadership of the Land and Housing Deprived Struggle Committee, farmers announced that an indefinite protest will begin from May 1 at all district headquarters in Karnataka. The committee said that thousands of landless farmers who have been cultivating forest land, grazing land and government land for decades are still waiting for legal ownership despite submitting applications in Form 50, 53 and 57.
The protesters accused successive governments of making promises but failing to deliver land rights to the poor. They also alleged that fertile lands cultivated by poor farmers are being diverted to companies, which they described as unfair and unjust.
The committee has demanded that all eligible Bagar Hukum applicants be granted land without delay. They also urged the government to withdraw notices issued against cultivators and provide housing sites for homeless families.
Leaders warned that if the issue is not resolved within the deadline, a large-scale agitation will be launched across the state. They said the struggle will continue until justice is delivered to landless farmers and their long-pending demands are fulfilled through proper government action and transparent implementation of land laws.
