Raichur
A 30-year-old housewife, Vidya alias Sudhiksha, was found dead under suspicious circumstances in Raichur city, prompting allegations of dowry harassment and murder by her husband and in-laws.
The incident occurred at the couple’s residence on IB Road. Vidya was married to Manjunath Upralamath on December 14, 2023, at the Rajamata Temple on Ashapur Road. Her family had provided 3 tolas of gold and half a kilogram of silver as dowry. Vidya worked as a programme assistant at a regional scientific institute in the city.
Her father, painter Mrityunjaya Swamy, alleged that soon after marriage, Vidya faced mental and physical harassment over dowry demands. Within four months, her husband allegedly began returning home drunk and assaulting her. Despite attempts by her parents to counsel the couple, the harassment continued. The family claimed additional gold was demanded during the Seemantha ceremony, and Vidya’s earnings were forced to be handed over to her in-laws.
Due to strained relations, Vidya’s mother had avoided visiting her house for seven months. On March 29, Vidya reportedly called her father in the afternoon about her husband’s presence at home. Later in the evening, around 7:39 pm, the husband allegedly informed her family that she had died by suicide. Upon reaching the house, her parents found her lying in the hall, raising suspicion about her death.
A case was registered against the husband and family for dowry harassment, cruelty, and suspected murder; investigation and post-mortem will determine the exact cause of death.
