Magnitude 4.5 earthquake hits Tajikistan mountains

Dushanbe

Tajikistan experienced a 4.5 magnitude earthquake yesterday at a depth of 146 km, the National Center for Seismology reported. Earlier, a 3.9 magnitude quake struck the region at 27 km depth on March 26. The mountainous country is highly prone to natural hazards, including earthquakes, landslides, floods, and avalanches. Remote terrain and aging infrastructure increase risks, especially for glacier-fed river basins and mountain communities. Experts stress integrating hazard data, climate projections, and local knowledge in infrastructure planning to enhance resilience. No immediate reports of casualties or damage have been released.
