India leads major global trade network push

NEW DELHI

India is taking a central role on the world stage to build stronger economic ties and reshape how countries trade with one another. During the 14th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal led a series of high-level meetings to expand India’s global business reach.

A key highlight was a meeting with U.S. representative Joseph Barloon, where both sides focused on deepening economic cooperation. This partnership is vital for India as it seeks to grow its tech and manufacturing sectors. Similar talks were held with Saudi Arabian officials to tackle global trade challenges and explore new opportunities in the Middle East, a region critical for India’s energy and investment needs.

India is also looking toward Southeast Asia and South America. Agrawal met with leaders from the Philippines to discuss boosting trade and reforming global systems to be fairer for developing nations. Meanwhile, talks with representatives from Chile and Paraguay focused on speeding up trade agreements that could open new markets for Indian goods in South America. Closer to home, India worked on improving trade systems with neighbors like Nepal to ensure smoother borders and stronger local relations. These back-to-back meetings show that India is not just participating in global trade but is actively working to lead it. By building these diverse partnerships, the country aims to create a more stable and prosperous economy that benefits its industries and citizens alike.
