Karnataka ups gas supply to help local businesses

BENGALURU
In a major relief for the state’s struggling hospitality sector, the Karnataka government announced a significant increase in the supply of commercial LPG cylinders. Officials confirmed that the daily allocation will rise by 1,000 units, bringing the state’s total supply to 10,000 cylinders to help battle recent fuel shortages.
The decision followed a high-level meeting between Food and Civil Supplies Minister K.H. Muniyappa, gas companies, and hotel associations. The extra fuel is aimed at keeping kitchens running in hotels, dhabas, hostels, and the state’s popular Indira Canteens. Business owners had recently warned that a lack of gas was forcing many establishments to shut their doors, as the daily demand in Bengaluru alone sits at nearly 50,000 cylinders.
To bring order to the distribution process, Minister Muniyappa issued a strict new rule: all commercial gas users must register with the Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) within one week. Those who fail to sign up will be cut off from the supply. This registration system is designed to stop illegal hoarding and ensure that the gas reaches those who truly need it.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had previously reached out to the Union Government for urgent help, noting that businesses were suffering because domestic gas was being prioritized over commercial needs. While the new increase is a start, the government will meet with hotel owners again to see if more help is needed. This move marks a vital step in stabilizing Karnataka’s vibrant food industry.
