Lalbagh Safe from Metro, Tunnel Projects, Says DCM Shivakumar

DCM said, “Lalbagh is a historical park, and I am more interested than anyone else in preserving it.”

BENGALURU

Bengaluru Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Thursday assured citizens that the ongoing metro and tunnel projects will not affect Lalbagh, dispelling concerns raised by some political groups. He made the statement while inaugurating the Tejaswi Vismaya Phala Pushpa Exhibition on Poornachandra Tejaswi at Lalbagh. “There is no problem with the metro and tunnel. Some people have politicized this issue unnecessarily. Citizens need not worry,” he said.

Shivakumar highlighted the need for urban development alongside environmental conservation. “The city’s population has grown from 70 lakh to 1.5 crore. Traffic congestion is a pressing issue, but our government is committed to preserving parks and lakes while taking steps to ease mobility,” he said.

The Deputy Chief Minister urged citizens, schoolchildren, and students to participate in the ongoing 10-day flower exhibition, praising local MLAs and ministers Ramalinga Reddy and Yuvaraj for their efforts.

He also announced plans to develop a model garden in Lalbagh’s northern section in the name of Basavanna, with a similar project planned for the southern part of Bengaluru. The Greater Bangalore Authority and the Corporation will provide financial support for these initiatives. Shivakumar added that the state is working to establish an international-level flower and vegetable market, with weekly exports of 17 aircraft loads of produce.

On law and order concerns, he addressed a recent incident in Shidlagatta where abusive language was used against the Municipal Commissioner. “This is a sacred place. No one is above the law. Those responsible must apologize, and action will be taken as per the law,” he warned.

Horticulture Minister S.S. Mallikarjuna, Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, MLA Udaya Garudachar, former BMC Opposition Leader Uday, and former Corporator Yuvaraj were present during the inauguration. Shivakumar reaffirmed his commitment to preserving Lalbagh while promoting urban development and cultural initiatives.
