Arsenal End Villa Winning Run as Man United, Chelsea Stumble

Arsenal surge clear in title race while rivals falter on pivotal Premier League night

London

Arsenal tightened their grip on the Premier League title race by emphatically ending Aston Villa’s 11-game winning run with a dominant 4-1 victory, as Manchester United and Chelsea both squandered opportunities to move into the top four.

Mikel Arteta’s side avenged their only defeat in the last 25 matches in all competitions — suffered at Villa Park earlier this month — to open up a five-point lead at the summit. “It is a beautiful evening,” Arteta said. “The way we started the second half was amazing. We really turned things up and were efficient in everything we did.”

After a cagey first half in which Villa threatened through Ollie Watkins, Arsenal blew the visitors away after the break. Gabriel Magalhaes broke the deadlock from a set-piece, outmuscling Emi Martinez on his return from a hamstring injury. Martin Odegaard then slipped a fine through ball for Martin Zubimendi to double the lead.

Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Jesus added further gloss with superb long-range strikes, leaving Villa stunned. Watkins netted a consolation, but Unai Emery’s men now trail the leaders by six points, with Manchester City able to cut the gap to two when they visit Sunderland on January 1.

At Old Trafford, Manchester United were held 1-1 by Wolves, who snapped a 12-game losing streak. Joshua Zirkzee’s deflected opener was cancelled out by Ladislav Krejci’s header, leaving United sixth and two points off the top four. “We lacked creativity,” admitted United boss Ruben Amorim.

Chelsea’s struggles continued with a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge, extending their poor run to one win in seven league games. Goals from Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez were offset by strikes from David Brooks and Justin Kluivert, while fans voiced frustration at Enzo Maresca’s decision to substitute Palmer.

Elsewhere, Newcastle earned a nervy 3-1 win at Burnley, Everton beat Nottingham Forest 2-0, and West Ham twice surrendered the lead in a 2-2 draw with Brighton, rounding off a dramatic night in the Premier League.
