Odisha police take action after temple throne photograph goes viral
Puri
Odisha Police on Wednesday filed a case after a photograph of the ‘Ratna Singhasan’ (bejewelled throne) inside the sanctum of Shree Jagannath Temple went viral on social media, raising questions about the shrine’s security. Puri SP Prateek Singh said the case was registered at Singha Dwar police station under sections of the Shree Jagannath Temple Act, and the cyber team is monitoring platforms where the photo was shared.
Despite a strict ban on cameras and mobile phones inside the temple, the picture of the deities—Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra, and Lord Jagannath—was taken at close range. Singh noted that action can be taken only after identifying those who clicked and shared the image. He also called for stronger legislation, saying such violations have become frequent.
Jagannath culture researcher Bhaskar Mishra emphasised that photography restrictions are crucial for shrine security, given potential threats. He urged authorities to investigate how a person managed to smuggle a camera or phone inside.
The incident has caused outrage among servitors, devotees, and the public, who are demanding accountability. Local resident Rathindra Mishra said responsibility lies not only with the person who clicked the picture but also with those who failed to enforce temple rules.
The police investigation continues as authorities work to ensure stricter security measures at the 12th-century shrine, highlighting the need to balance tradition with modern safety protocols.
