Sandalwood actor and director Rishab Shetty is facing sharp criticism online after he wished success to Darshan Thoogudeepa’s new film The Devil even as the actor remains in custody in a murder case. The post, shared a day before the film’s release, has upset many social media users who felt the message was insensitive.
In his message, Rishab wrote, Wishing dasadarshan Sir and the entire team of Devil a blockbuster release! May the film set the screens on fire. Soon after, several users reacted strongly, saying that a public figure should not support someone facing a serious allegation. Darshan is currently in judicial custody for his alleged role in the murder of 33-year-old fan Renukaswamy, a case that has drawn major public attention.
One user said Rishab was supporting a man of no values, while another accused him of taking a U-turn by praising a criminal in jail. Many users reminded Rishab that influential personalities have a duty to uphold moral standards. Some even questioned why he would support a person accused of murder.
The controversy has once again opened discussions on how celebrities shape public opinion. Many people online said stars should think carefully before posting public messages, especially during sensitive situations.
Meanwhile, The Devil, directed by Prakash Veer, released yesterday. The action film stars Rachana Rai, Mahesh Manjrekar and Achyuth Kumar, with music by B. Ajaneesh Loknath. The movie, promoted as a stylish action drama about power and revenge, released despite the ongoing case and drew mixed reactions.
