BJP Amit Shah
New Delhi
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday firmly backed Union Home Minister Amit Shah after he launched a scathing attack on the Congress and other opposition parties in the Lok Sabha, accusing them of spreading misinformation about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and attempting to malign India’s democratic processes. Shah asserted that the Narendra Modi government will not allow infiltrators to get voting rights, triggering an intense exchange with Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi.
Outside Parliament, Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal defended Shah’s statements, saying the Home Minister had responded comprehensively to every point raised by the opposition during the debate on electoral reforms. He responded to every point raised by the opposition, but they did not listen to his answers in full, Meghwal remarked.
Union Minister Virendra Kumar also expressed support, stating, What he said to safeguard the future of the coming generations is absolutely correct.
Several BJP MPs echoed these sentiments. Praveen Khandelwal said, The Congress’ narrative was completely exposed. Amit Shah laid out historical facts and dismantled their claims. The conspiracy woven by Congress and other opposition parties was fully unmasked in the House yesterday.
BJP MP Samik Bhattacharya reiterated long-standing party concerns over demographic changes in border regions. The BJP has long warned that a silent demographic shift is underway. In West Bengal, especially in border districts like Darjeeling and North Bengal, demographics are changing because of the influx of Rohingya and Bangladeshi immigrants, he said.
Dinesh Sharma, another BJP MP, added that Shah had effectively countered what he described as false claims and propaganda spread by the Congress. They had no reply, he asserted.
The Congress, however, sharply criticised the Home Minister’s conduct. Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat said that while Amit Shah holds a respected office, his demeanour in the House fell short of parliamentary expectations.
