A mild earthquake measuring 4.5 struck Northern Sumatra on Wednesday, according to the National Center for Seismology. The tremor occurred at a depth of 150 km. Earlier in October, a stronger 6.6-magnitude quake hit West Papua at a depth of 55 km. Indonesia often experiences earthquakes and volcanic activity because it lies on the Ring of Fire, a large zone around the Pacific Ocean known for active volcanoes and frequent seismic movements.
