New tech promises smarter parking for Bengaluru

BENGALURU

Bengaluru’s growing parking troubles may soon ease, as the city’s Traffic Police have put forward a new plan to introduce advanced mechanised Multi Level Car Parking (MLCP) systems at 66 locations across the city. The proposal comes after a recent high-level meeting where officials were asked to find practical solutions to the worsening parking crisis.

The new technology uses tall, nine-storey metal structures that lift and stack cars vertically with the help of hydraulic systems. Because these structures do not need concrete buildings, they can fit into smaller spaces and cost less to build. Officers say this makes the model suitable for a fast-growing city where free land is shrinking every year.

Joint Commissioner of Traffic, Karthik Reddy, explained that Hyderabad already uses this system successfully. Drivers simply leave their cars in a bay area. A rotating pulley and lift then move the vehicle to an empty slot above. When the driver returns, the machine brings the car back down in the same smooth way. According to officials, this also reduces congestion.

Most of the proposed MLCP spots are near metro stations and busy commercial zones, where parking demand is highest. The Traffic Police have now submitted the plan to the Greater Bengaluru Authority for approval. If cleared, the project could give the city a cleaner, more organised way to handle its daily rush of vehicles.
