Ex-CM Yediyurappa and three others have been summoned by a fast-track court in a serious POCSO case
Bengaluru
A major development has taken place in the POCSO case filed against former Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa. The 1st Fast-Track Special Court has issued summons to Yediyurappa and three other accused, directing them to appear before the court on December 2 for the framing of charges. This comes soon after the High Court granted permission for the trial to proceed, dismissing Yediyurappa’s plea challenging earlier summons.
Earlier, a lower court had issued summons for charge framing, which Yediyurappa had contested in the High Court. However, after reviewing the case, the High Court rejected his petition, clearing the way for the trial under the POCSO Act. Following this order, the Fast-Track Court has now formally summoned all four accused.
Background of the Case
The case dates back to a complaint filed in March 2024, alleging that Yediyurappa sexually assaulted a 17-year-old girl at his residence in Dollars Colony, Bengaluru. The girl’s mother had approached him seeking help, during which the alleged incident occurred. Based on the complaint, the Sadashivanagar Police registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Considering the seriousness of the allegations, the government transferred the investigation to the CID. After months of inquiry, the CID submitted a detailed 750-page chargesheet in June 2024 against Yediyurappa and three associates. The chargesheet includes allegations of not only sexual assault but also attempts to destroy evidence and suppress the complaint.
Both the survivor and her mother had recorded their statements before a magistrate as part of the investigation process. In a tragic turn, the girl’s mother passed away on May 26, 2024.
With the Fast-Track Court issuing fresh summons, the case is now moving toward the trial phase. The upcoming court appearance on December 2 will mark a critical step in determining how the proceedings unfold against the former Chief Minister and the other accused.
