Haveri
A tragic incident occurred at the Women and Children’s Hospital in Haveri district on Tuesday when a pregnant woman slipped while walking towards the restroom, causing her newborn to fall and sustain fatal head injuries. The child died on the spot. Family members have blamed doctors and nurses for negligence, citing lack of proper care as the primary reason for the tragedy.
The victim, Rupa Girish Karabanna (30) from Kakol village in Ranebennur taluk, had been admitted to the hospital due to severe labor pains. The labor ward was overcrowded, and no bed was available for her, forcing Rupa to sit on the floor. While experiencing extreme pain, she was not provided assistance. As she attempted to reach the restroom, she tripped on the way, and the newborn fell with severe impact on the head.
Family members alleged that medical staff failed to respond despite her cries for help. Many nurses were reportedly distracted, talking on mobile phones instead of attending to patients. “Even though Rupa was in intense labor pain, the doctors and nurses ignored her calls for help. She fell while walking, and because of their negligence, our child died,” said the grieving relatives.
The incident has sparked outrage among the local community, raising concerns over hospital overcrowding, lack of proper monitoring, and accountability of healthcare staff. Authorities are being urged to investigate the circumstances thoroughly, ensure stricter supervision in maternity wards, and take steps to prevent such avoidable tragedies in the future.
