Rajamouli faces huge IMAX test with Varanasi

Director SS Rajamouli has finally revealed the title of his much-awaited film with Superstar Mahesh Babu. The movie, named Varanasi, has already wowed audiences with its first glimpse, which highlights massive visuals, ambitious ideas, and rich world-building. But behind all the excitement lies what may be the toughest challenge of Rajamouli’s career.

Varanasi is being made fully for IMAX, one of the most demanding formats in global cinema. Fans are thrilled because the film will be presented in the large 1.43:1 IMAX screens, known for delivering an unmatched immersive experience. However, this choice also brings intense pressure, as IMAX requires flawless clarity, perfect lighting, sharp VFX, and extremely precise framing. Even small mistakes look bigger on these screens.

The challenge becomes even tougher because Varanasi is only the second Indian film designed completely for IMAX. The first is Nitish Tiwari’s Ramayana, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi, and Yash. That film is set for a Diwali 2026 release and is already listed on IMAX’s global slate. Since Ramayana arrives first, it will set the technical bar for Indian IMAX filmmaking. If it impresses, Rajamouli must match or surpass it.

Rajamouli is known for mixing strong emotions with grand spectacle, and Varanasi demands artistic beauty along with technological mastery. Every department—from camera work to VFX—must operate at peak performance.

The early glimpse has sparked worldwide discussions, and excitement is rising quickly. Planned for a summer 2027 release, likely March 17, Varanasi is expected to push Indian cinema to new global heights.
