Vijayapura
Residents of Vijayapura district are living in fear after experiencing more than a dozen mild earthquakes within the last two months. People from Sindagi, Basavanbagewadi, and Vijayapura taluks have reported repeated tremors and strange underground noises, especially during the night, leaving many sleepless and anxious.
According to reports, the latest earthquake, measuring 2.9 on the Richter scale, was recorded on October 21. Locals rushed out of their homes in panic as vibrations and loud rumbling sounds shook the area. The continuous underground noises have led many to believe that a larger quake might occur soon, prompting public appeals for scientific investigation.
This phenomenon isn’t new for the district. Four years ago, similar tremors were recorded, after which geologists from Delhi and Hyderabad examined the region. Experts then concluded that the vibrations were of low intensity and caused by natural underground activity, not major seismic shifts.
District In-charge Minister M. B. Patil addressed the issue, assuring that Vijayapura is not an earthquake-prone zone. He explained that the mild tremors might be due to the movement of groundwater and limestone layers beneath the surface, which intensifies during heavy rainfall. He urged residents to remain calm and avoid panic.
Authorities have promised to bring in a team of expert geologists to reexamine the affected areas. Locals, however, continue to demand quick action and reassurance, as persistent tremors have reignited old fears and shaken confidence across the district.
