Hubballi
In a colorful tribute to Kannada, a driver from the North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) has transformed his bus into a moving Kannada chariot. The bus, fully decorated with vibrant yellow and red colors, Kannada flags, posters, and portraits of famous Kannada writers, has become a unique showcase of the state’s culture and heritage.
Nagaraja Boomannavar, a driver from the Hubballi Rural 1st Unit, spent over one lakh rupees of his own money and labor to turn the bus into a Kannada Terani. The vehicle now features maps of all 31 districts of Karnataka, information about freedom fighters, notable personalities, Basavadi leaders, and a small library containing books about Kannada literature, history, and the growth of the transport department.
The initiative coincides with Kannada Rajyotsava celebrations, which NWKRTC has been marking for several years with special displays. This year, silent films depicting Karnataka’s heritage were also created. One film highlights the famous Chitradurga Fort, sharing details about the state’s historic sites, the government’s Shakti Yojana free travel scheme for women, and the Limca Award-winning Chigari bus service. Another film showcases the heritage of Hampi, drawing attention to important monuments.
Divisional Control Officer H. Raman Gowder praised the efforts, noting that every year, silent films and displays are created to promote awareness of Kannada culture and history. He highlighted the inclusion of new innovations, like cashless payment systems in state transport services, and the extensive portrayal of different types of buses including general, express, sleeper, and luxury AC services.
The initiative reflects the passion of drivers, conductors, and staff, who often spend their own resources to celebrate Kannada pride. Nagaraja Boomannavar’s dedication has turned an ordinary bus into a moving cultural exhibit, earning admiration from colleagues and the public alike.
NWKRTC’s Kannada-themed buses are now not just vehicles—they are educational and cultural platforms that celebrate Karnataka’s rich heritage, making every journey a colorful and informative experience.
