Following the tragic deaths of two villagers in a wild elephant attack at Kerekatte village in Sringeri taluk, Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre has ordered an immediate capture operation. In response, six trained elephants — Ekalavya, Dhananjaya, Prashant, Harsha and two others — have been brought to the Kerekatte checkpost for the mission, which will begin on Monday.
The rogue elephant has been frequently sighted around Karemane village, damaging farms and plantations, creating panic among locals. On Saturday, it entered an areca plantation and caused heavy destruction. Earlier, the elephant had attacked and killed Harish and Umesh in separate incidents when they were near their homes.
Minister K.J. George visited the victims’ families, offering condolences and announcing ₹5 lakh personal aid, while MLA T.D. Rajegowda contributed ₹1 lakh each. George also assured villagers that the elephant would be captured soon.
The recurring elephant attacks have angered residents, who allege forest officials have ignored repeated pleas for safety. Locals confronted officials, including the Deputy Commissioner Meena Nagaraj and SP Vikram Amate, demanding stronger preventive measures and the minister’s immediate visit. The villagers have warned of continuing protests until firm action is taken.
