“Artificial Intelligence (AI) exists for the advancement of humanity, not its downfall. It is our responsibility to use it wisely,” said noted computer scientist and Nadoja awardee Prof. K.P. Rao. He was speaking at the Prof. Kamala Hampana Endowment Lecture on “Artificial Intelligence and Literature” held at Tumakuru University on Tuesday.
Prof. Rao observed that today, all knowledge of the world is stored inside computers. “Machines know everything — we only need to know how to ask the right questions. A computer provides accurate answers only when we pose clear and meaningful questions,” he said. Comparing technology to a double-edged sword, he emphasized that AI should be harnessed for positive and creative purposes to serve humanity as a blessing, not a threat.
He further stated that new discoveries rarely happen in calm situations; human progress often emerges through conflict and challenge. “Computers do not face such emotional conflicts, which makes them efficient but not human,” he noted. Rao also pointed out that while significant AI research has been done in English, very little work exists in Kannada and other Indian languages.
Veteran writer Prof. Hampa Nagarajaiah remarked that language is the foundation of all knowledge and without it, the world would remain in darkness. He urged people not to forget their language, literature, and culture.
Presiding over the session, Vice-Chancellor Prof. M. Venkateshwaralu praised Prof. Rao as a visionary who integrated Indian languages, including Kannada, into computers.
The event was coordinated by Dr. Geetha Vasanth, with professors Nityananda B. Shetty and Annama also in attendance.
