Bengaluru
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said that an agreement has been signed with the central government-owned Gas Authority of India (GAIL) to produce gas from about 500 tons of waste generated in the city.
Speaking at the Vidhana Soudha after handing over the agreement signed with GAIL for setting up a gas production unit from waste, Shivakumar said that GAIL is setting up a gas production unit at a cost of Rs 123 crore. The state government has already provided them with a place. For the first time, the government has joined hands with this experiment in Bengaluru. He said that we are ready to sign several agreements with this company in the future.
This will reduce the garbage problem in Bengaluru city. Gas production should start as soon as possible. The gas produced here should be distributed to the public and hoteliers, he said.
Responding to Biocon CEO Kiran Majumdar’s ex-post that GBA is not handling the garbage problem, he said, what are we doing with GAIL. We have done everything for garbage disposal. But the court obstructed us. A large team is working behind this. None of them cooperated with us. Now they have allowed garbage disposal in 33 packages. Disposal units are also being set up. This will continue continuously going forward.
The Deputy Chief Minister said that government officials, GBA Commissioner, and officials of the Solid Waste Management Agency signed the agreement in my presence and handed over the agreements with GAIL.
Greater Bangalore Authority Chief Commissioner Dr Maheshwar Rao and GAIL Executive Director SN Yadav signed and exchanged documents at Vidhana Soudha for the agreement on scientific waste treatment and disposal and gas production in Bengaluru. This is a significant decision regarding waste disposal.
