Indian-Origin Man Extradited to Canada in 2021 Assault Case

ONTARIO

An Indian-origin man, arrested in Texas earlier this year, has been extradited to Canada in connection with the 2021 assault on Elnaz Hajtamiri, according to Canadian media reports.

Sukhpreet Singh, 25, was arrested in June by the United States Marshals Service and charged in August. He was extradited to York Region, Ontario, on Tuesday and now faces charges of aggravated assault and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, York Regional Police said.

A Canada-wide warrant had been issued against Singh in 2023 after investigators identified him as a suspect in the violent attack on Hajtamiri inside an underground parking garage in Richmond Hill.

In 2022, four people—including Hajtamiri’s ex-boyfriend, Mohamad Lilo—were charged in connection with the assault, attempted murder, and attempted kidnapping. The following year, three more suspects were arrested. Singh’s extradition brings the total number of accused in the case to eight.

Hajtamiri was later abducted from Wasaga Beach on January 12, 2022, just weeks after the Richmond Hill assault, and remains missing. York Regional Police and Ontario Provincial Police continue to investigate her disappearance. Authorities have announced a reward of CAD 100,000 for information leading to her whereabouts.

Other suspects in the case include Harshdeep Binner, Riyasat Singh, Harshpreet Sekhon, Akash Rana, and Jaspreet Singh, CTV News reported.
