Gehlot questioned why Wangchuk, who often praised Modi, was suddenly charged and jailed despite his previous support

Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday urged the government to release climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is currently detained in Jodhpur jail under the National Security Act (NSA).
Wangchuk, a respected activist from Ladakh, is known for his work in education, environmental protection, and social reforms. Expressing shock over the arrest, Gehlot said, “Sonam Wangchuk has dedicated his life to education and the environment. He is admired throughout Leh and Ladakh. His detention is incomprehensible.”
Gehlot also pointed out that Wangchuk had often praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the past. “He supported Modi and spoke highly of him. What changed so suddenly that he was charged and jailed?” Gehlot questioned.
Referring to Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, Gehlot described her as “intelligent and thoughtful,” adding that her concerns must be taken seriously by the authorities. He said Wangchuk’s clean record and decades of service made his detention unjustified. “He should be released immediately,” Gehlot insisted.
Meanwhile, Gitanjali Angmo has approached the Supreme Court, challenging the NSA detention order. She also expressed worry about not receiving updates on Wangchuk’s health. In her petition, she argued that imposing the anti-terror law on a peaceful activist was excessive.
Wangchuk has earned national and international acclaim for his innovative low-cost schools, sustainable environmental projects, and promotion of scientific learning among students in Ladakh. His initiatives have inspired youth and brought global recognition to the region.
Calling his detention unfair, Gehlot appealed to the government to respect Wangchuk’s lifelong contributions and ensure his immediate release.
