Rahul Gandhi slams attack on Indian democracy

Bogota

Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Thursday accused the ruling dispensation of a “wholesale attack on the democratic system” in India. Speaking at EIA University in Medellin, Colombia, he stressed the need to protect India’s diversity of traditions, religions, and languages.

Gandhi said India’s strength lies in its unique democratic structure and rich spiritual heritage, which differs greatly from China’s system. “India has multiple religions, traditions, and languages. India is a conversation between all its people,” he said. He warned that democracy is essential to provide space for diverse ideas and traditions.

“I am very optimistic about India, but at the same time, there are fault lines in the Indian structure. The biggest risk is the attack on democracy that is taking place,” Gandhi stated. He added that unlike China’s authoritarian approach, India must safeguard its pluralistic spirit. “Our design will just not accept that,” he asserted.

Gandhi’s remarks come during his four-nation visit to South America, where he also met Colombian Senate President Lidio Gracia. The visit focuses on building international dialogue and exchanging ideas on governance and democracy.

His statement at the Colombian university has sparked debate in India, with the BJP criticising him for his comments. Gandhi emphasised that allowing different traditions to thrive is vital for India’s future. His address underscored concerns about democratic principles and urged the preservation of India’s cultural and political diversity.
