Karnataka assures smooth caste survey

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Sunday assured that the state government will address all concerns related to the upcoming caste survey, scheduled from September 22 to October 7. Speaking to reporters, Shivakumar emphasized, “Nothing will happen, don’t worry. We will resolve all problems and ensure a new survey is conducted smoothly.”

Home Minister G. Parmeshwara clarified that the survey’s data will not be used for reservation purposes but may guide government programs for underprivileged communities. “This is not about any particular caste. It is only to enumerate the numbers of each caste. The data can help design special programs for those who have been deprived,” Parmeshwara said.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, addressing reporters in Gadag, described the survey as more than a mere caste count, emphasizing its role as a comprehensive social, economic, and educational assessment. “The survey will provide equal opportunities to disadvantaged communities by collecting details about their caste, economic status, and educational conditions,” he said.

Rejecting criticisms and political conspiracy claims, Siddaramaiah said the central government also conducts caste surveys, questioning the opposition’s objection. He stressed that the survey aims to prioritize the poor in government schemes rather than divide society along caste lines.

On the proposal to include the Kuruba community in the Scheduled Tribe category, Siddaramaiah noted that the previous BJP government had submitted the recommendation, which was returned by the Centre. The state government will provide explanations, but any inclusion decision rests with the central authorities. The government reiterated that the survey’s purpose Is to create equitable policies, improve developmental programs, and strengthen social welfare for Karnataka’s disadvantaged communities.
