Sonia, Rahul meet Mauritius PM Ramgoolam

During his visit, Ramgoolam met officials, and signed agreements, including a USD 680 million Special Economic Package

Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party, and senior leader Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, met Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam in New Delhi on Tuesday during his official visit to India. The leaders discussed the strong and enduring friendship between the two countries, emphasizing the deep historical, cultural, and people-to-people ties. Rahul Gandhi shared on social media, “Along with CPP Chairperson Smt. Sonia Gandhi, I had the pleasure of calling on H.E. Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam. We spoke about the deep and enduring friendship that binds our two nations and peoples.”

PM Ramgoolam’s visit, scheduled from September 9 to September 16, includes political, cultural, and spiritual engagements. Earlier, President Droupadi Murmu met him at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where both leaders highlighted the unique relationship between India and Mauritius, rooted in shared history, language, culture, and values. President Murmu expressed confidence that under PM Ramgoolam’s experienced leadership, the bilateral ties would continue to grow stronger in the future.

During his visit, Ramgoolam paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat in New Delhi and signed the visitors’ book. He arrived in the capital on Monday, warmly received by Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth. Prior to this, he visited the Tirumala Temple in Tirupati and attended an event at Bramarishi Ashram, where he was welcomed by spiritual leader Siddhguru Sideswar Bramedswi Gurudev Swami. He also visited Varanasi, met Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, and held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during which multiple agreements were signed, including a Special Economic Package worth over USD 680 million. On September 12, he visited the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya.
